The valley of Kashmir, in which Srinagar is located, is also referred as heaven on the earth. It is located on the center of the Kashmir valley . The Mughal emperor Jahangir was so impressed by the beauty of this valley that he exclaimed Gar firdaus, ruhe zamin ast, hamin asto, hamin asto, hamin asto (If there is a heaven on earth, its here, its here, its here). It lies at an elevation of about 1,730 m above sea level. The district of Srinagar is situated on either sides of the Jhelum River, making its locales picturesque and beautiful. The major attractions of Srinagar travel include Dal Lake and Nagin Lake. One can enjoy the panoramic view of the mountains surrounding Srinagar from these lakes. Most of the houseboats (Shikaras) in Kashmir will be seen in these lakes only. The Mughal Gardens set up by various rulers of the Mughal dynasty further enhance the beauty of Srinagar. Other major draws of Srinagar are water sports activities, handcrafted souvenirs, amazing resort nearby etc. Travelers can enjoy taking a ride on traditional Kashmiri boats or the Shikaras to explore the intricate maze of waterways of Dal lake. Srinagar is famous for its traditional Kashmiri handicrafts. Craft items from Srinagar make good souvenirs. There are also a number of utilitarian items of daily use. Woolen and silk carpets from Srinagar are a specialty, they are not only known for their highly intricate decorations and patterns, which show a strong Islamic/Persian influence, they are also renowned for their durability and subtle colors.
